Holiday Random Acts of Kindness

Seasons Greetings!!

Don't you LOVE this time of the year!  I do … the weather starts to turn cooler and our spirits are brighter, hopeful, full of family and friends, and full of love for all people.

While thinking about what I could share with you today, I stumbled upon this article, Holiday Random Acts of Kindness, on Stampin' Up!'s website by Cathy Caines, a member of the 2017 Artisan Design Team.  Her idea embodies what I believe makes this time of the year so special – The Spirit of Christmas .  I think it's a GREAT idea and hope to incorporate some of her ideas this season.  Maybe you will as well.

Holiday Random Acts of Kindness

You can feel the crisp chill in the air here on the East Coast of Canada. As I put on my mittens, you can almost hear the jingle bells in the distance. Honestly, it makes me a little bit giddy inside. I truly feel the magic every single year.

Every year, I vow to get organized early. Typically one of the first items on my agenda is to get our advent calendars ready. The tradition in our family is to select a wrapped holiday book every evening as well as a Lego advent calendar for each child in the mornings. However, this year my kids are now seven and five. It’s a great age to begin some Random Acts of Kindness. This Holiday List works the same way as a typical countdown to Christmas where my children will select a note each day.

The Trim Your Stocking Thinlits Dies (144682) is a perfect product to hold the twenty-four pieces of rolled-up paper containing the Random Act of Kindness.

To begin this project, I cut out 25 stockings using the Merry Little Christmas Designer Series Paper (144621) and the Merry Little Christmas 12" x 12" Cardstock Pack (144622). Carefully I pieced each holiday stocking together and placed a number made out of Real Red Cardstock (102482) and the Large Numbers Framelits Dies (140622). Finally, I attached each stocking with Real Red 1/8" Solid Ribbon (144631) and hung it on a large decorative frame using the Jute Twine (144625). If you don’t have a large frame, you could quite easily use a three-foot Christmas tree to hang these stockings.

The Trim Your Stocking Thinlits Dies also come with a pillow box-shaped die, which fits a gift card perfectly. It allowed me to have a pocket on each holiday stocking where I could place a rolled-up Random Act of Kindness. Since my children are young, I selected Random Acts of Kindness that did not take a great deal of time and would not be a financial burden. While I researched online for some ideas, it was easy to select 24 acts. I encourage you to tailor your own family’s Random Acts of Kindness list to what best works for you.

Here’s the Caines Family Holiday Random Acts of Kindness List:

  1. Send a card to a stranger, such as an overseas service member.
  2. Donate new toys to the Happy Tree.
  3. “Sock” a friend by putting a treat in a holiday stocking on someone’s doorknob with a special note.
  4. Make five sticky note messages and place them on a mirror or door. A drawing or a note like “You are beautiful” would be perfect.
  5. Bring a joke to school to read to your class.
  6. Donate food to the food bank.
  7. Help Nanny put away the dirty dishes.
  8. Draw a picture for your teacher and give it to her along with a treat.
  9. Shovel for a neighbor or clear off their cars before they wake up.
  10. Donate 10 books you no longer need.
  11. Help clean the neighborhood on a walk. Be sure to wear your gloves and bring a garbage bag.
  12. Go through old towels and blankets to donate to the animal shelter.
  13. Drop by a senior’s home and bring a poinsettia. Be sure to say hello!
  14. Donate some cards to Ronald McDonald House.
  15. Write a list of five things you are thankful for
  16. Pay for someone’s coffee.
  17. Donate some money to a charity.
  18. Leave candy canes on someone’s windshield.
  19. Put a treat in the mailbox for the mail carrier.
  20. Call both your grandmas just to say hello.
  21. Bring coloring books to the doctor’s waiting room and the gymnastics viewing room.
  22. Decorate rocks using paint and place them around the neighborhood for strangers to find (“kindness rocks”).
  23. Be a helper by picking up 10 things off the floor each day.
  24. Give five people a compliment. Or more!
  25. Merry Christmas!

I am so excited to share these adventures with my children and I truly believe that these little gestures will make a big difference in our small community.

I’m wishing you all the best in your holiday preparations!

Birthday Swap … All for ME!!

WP_20140517_002My Birthday was Thursday and I got to share it with two of my Stampin' groups.  The more experience group, shall I say, all made Birthday cards for me.  I told them it was like a swap all for me.  While they all were beautiful cards … the inside of these cards was priceless.  For me, one of the BEST parts of having a Stampin' Up! business is the friends you make.  It has given me the opportunity to grow my circle of close friends.  Most of them I have known for a while (they are members of my church) but others are brand new friends.  Whether old or new, friendship and relationships are what Stampin' Up! is all about.  The cards we make together … that's just a bonus.

The ladies who made these cards are partialy responsible for helping me to achieve status of RISING STAR in 2010.  That is the highest honor in the company for a brand new demonstrator.  I'm so proud to call each of them my customers, but more importantly … MY BUDDIES!!!

Thanks for stopping by.

I found this on the Stampin' Up! Blog — Aren't they GREAT ideas for Halloween.

Need to scare up a Halloween teacher gift? We’ve got a few that might just do the trick.

Our Witchy Whittled Wands, for instance, would charm even the most forbidding defense against the dark arts professor. Just empty a water bottle, fill it with sharpened pencils (or licorice!) wrap it with Designer Series Paper (NA/CA), decorate the cap with Witches’ Brew Designer Washi Tape1-1/4" Burlap Ribbon, and Linen Thread – then adhere our label (made using MDS).

It’s a snap to transform a white craft pumpkin into a spellbinding teacher gift. Wrap it with our Witches’ Brew Designer Washi Tape—then deliver it with a drearily delicious goodie. Easy as A,B, C!

Know a teacher who loves a good laugh . . . er . . . cackle? Give her a reversible The Witch Is In/The Witch Is Out sign for her desk. I bought a 99 cent frame from IKEA, spray-painted it gold, and created the signs in MDS. The components are listed here.

A simple craft witch hat (around $4.00) spray-painted gold makes a heinous teacher gift. Embellish it with a bow made using the Big Shot (NA/CA), our new Gift Bow Bigz L Die, and Sweater Weather Designer Series Paper.

Love that creepy bag of gruesome gumdrops? It was made using Witches’ Brew Designer Series Paper, Sweater Weather Designer Series Paper, and a folded Tea Lace Paper Doily. The witch silhouette was created in MDS using theSophisticated Spooks Punch. And the gumdrops are enclosed in a Medium Cellophane Bag. Wondering about the chalkboard tag? It was cut from this very handy sheet of Witches’ Brew Designer Series Paper.

Think of all of the teacher gifts you could make with this sheet of paper alone! For more ideas, see the Robyn’s fun and fancy Halloween table on display in the Concept Art Team’s most recent blog post.

I couldn’t resist making a witch hat display with the “Witches Candy Shoppe” image (above) and Tag a Bag Gift Bags. And then I thought: what a fun class activity this could be! Ask the students to bring a bag of candy from home, then set up a Witches Candy Shoppe! Kids must pay for the candies with witchy paper money—in the correct denominations, of course.

Last but not least, “specimen jars” make great Halloween gifts for fifth or sixth grade teachers. Find miniature critters at toy, craft, or party stores.  I made the specimen tags in MDS and adhered them to Natural Composition Specialty Designer Series Paper cards. (And if you’re wondering about the plastic snake—I added a drop or two of Old Olive Classic Ink Refill to the water.)

Got any fun ideas for Halloween teacher gifts? We’d love to hear about them!

P.S. Many thanks to my kind friend, Selma G., of the Events department for helping me make the flag, bow, and flowers. (For the latter, she used the Blossomand Pansy Punches.)

Have a FANTASTIC day!!

Product Showcase: NEW Envelope Punch Board

Stampin' Up! is premiering it's BRAND NEW Envelope Punch Board.  This product enables you to create envelopes of any size and you can coordinate your envelopes with your cards — from itty bitty to long skinny envelopes.  And … you can also create liners by making an envelope a size smaller.

Some features of the ENVELOPE PUNCH BOARD includes:

It creates totally customizable envelopes in up to 66 different sizes (not to mention a million different color and pattern options depending on the paper you want to use).  Even tried and tru envelope sizes will only take you moments to create.

It's super easy to use!

It's small and lightweight, which makes it super portable and easy to store.  You can take it anywhere — even to a soccer match, the park, or to a friend's house for craft-night ANYWHERE!!

It even has a slick scoring tool as well as a punch that lets you create rounded corners on your envelopes.

It's easy to keep it all together; the stylus storage compartment and two punches are designed into the tool so you don't have a bunch of little pieces to keep track of (the instructions are even printed right on the tool so you won't lose them!).

The price is terrific … especially for a tool that does SO much!   It's only $19.95.

NOTE:   They were available on September 1, 2013 and … at my first class after that — everYbody bought one!!  It's the best thing since "sliced bread"!!!

So … stop by my store and get yours TODAY!!

Happy Stampin'!!

Birthday Basics Pop-Up Card

Hi, Stampers!!!

I wanted to share with you two pop-up cards that I have made using the same technique.  Any time I have received a pop-up card in the mail, especially as a child, I was always excited … so I was glad when I learned to to make my own.  I actually CASEd the balloon card (that means I copied it) from Dawn Olchefske. She is one  of my favorite resources for different techniques used in making greeting cards.  (All supplies have been purchased from Stampin' Up! and are available in my store.)

Stamp Set:    Chalk Talk

Paper:    Bermuda Bay, Raspberry Ripple, Summer Starfruit, Very Vanilla, Birthday Basics Designer Series Paper

Ink:    Raspberry Ripple

Accessories:   Big Shot, Magnetic Platform, Chalk Talk Framelits, Small Oval Punch, Owl Builder Punch, Whisper White Baker's Twine, Stampin' Dimensionals

This card (left) was made using the Topsy Turvy stamp set (retired).  The inside featuring the pop-up is pictured below.  The top box didn't pop up here but … it was supposed to.  =)  You can't see it very well, but there is a small bow on top of the top box.  You can change the ribbon if you like to a wider ribbon.  I kept it small to keep the card from being too bulky.

Making the inside of this card can be somewhat of a challenge once you learn, it is really quite simple.  I have included Dawn's video tutorial on the steps to do this (tips to make it easier are also included on the video).

I hope you enjoy making this card as much as I did.
